Anyone who will be operating a motorized vessel in New Jersey needs boater education.
Some operators may also be required to get a non-tidal boat license.

Students taking the New Jersey course may be required to provide:

Course expiration and extensions
New Jersey courses expire after 90 days.
Extensions are available for the following course options:

- Boat-Ed
Quizzes and final exam
Exam requirements may vary by course option.
Boaterexam: Quizzes include 10 questions. Students must score 80% or higher to pass or they must redo the chapter. The final exam is proctored in person.
Boat-Ed: Quizzes include 10 questions. Students must score 80% or higher to pass or they must redo the chapter. The final exam is proctored in person.
Students must score at least 80% on the New Jersey State Police Boating Safety Test to pass. Students have 2 attempts. If they do not pass on the first attempt, they may retake the test after 24 hours. If they do not pass on the second attempt, they must retake the online course.
Proctored exam information
After completing the online course, students can immediately print their proctored exam voucher.
If a student did not register for the proctored exam before course registration, they can find the registration link:
- On the exam voucher for Boaterexam
- At the bottom of the Online Course Completion Certificate for Boat-Ed
The voucher expires 365 days from the issue date.
A photo ID is required for admittance into the in-person exam. Students should also bring their Online Course Completion Certificate as proof of online course completion.
After completing the course
After completing the online course, students can print their proctored exam voucher.
Students must pass the in-person proctored exam to complete the certification process.
Replacement cards
If a student has already received their initial permanent card after completing the proctored exam, they should contact their examiner. The examiner’s name and phone number are listed on their application.
Otherwise, students should contact the state for replacement card assistance.
